Koi Kites Bring Colour And Culture Back To Mackay's City Heart

January 30, 2025

Over the last few weeks, Mackay's city heart has undergone a major transformation, with the Mky City Heart Collective leading efforts to revitalise the region. This initiative celebrates the city’s rich history, particularly its once-thriving Chinatown, by blending art, culture, and community to breathe new life into downtown Mackay.

Inspired by the once-thriving Chinatown district between Wellington and Macalister streets from the 1880s to the 1930s, the project highlights this important hub for market gardens and Asian grocers. Despite its significance, this chapter of Mackay's history remains largely unknown to many, and that’s why the Mky City Heart Collective is working hard to bring this forgotten history back to life.

Local business owners, artists, and volunteers have teamed up to create unique experiences for the community that blend Mackay's history with modern-day culture. Among the highlights is a stunning installation of traditional Koi kites, created by the community and on display as part of the celebrations.

These kites, along with other stunning art pieces, aim to acknowledge the importance of Chinatown while injecting fresh energy, colour, and creativity into the city.

Ally Blines, owner of Let The Children Play Toyshop, is one of the many local business owners contributing to this exciting initiative.

"The kites are part of a bigger project," she explains.

Ally has been hosting kite-making workshops at Let The Children Play Toyshop during the school holidays, where children can create their own Koi kites that will be featured in the installation.

"We did some workshops in-store during the school holidays where the kids could make kites and they're being used in the installation and then they can come and collect them when it's all over.

“It’s about making people aware that this part of town used to be part of Mackay’s Chinatown,” she shares.

“A lot of people don’t realise that we had a Chinatown or what an important part it played in the development of the city.”

As part of the Mky City Heart Collective, Ally is just one member of a passionate group of volunteers, business owners, and artists all working together to show that the city heart is far from "dead."

"We all work together…there's actually a lot happening here in the city heart and we just want people to know that our town is alive and it’s such a nice community to be involved in!”

Vibrant Events Await In 2025 With Mackay Isaac Tourism's “Keep Up” Campaign

January 30, 2025

Last Tuesday, the Mackay Isaac Region kicked off 2025 with the launch of its bold new destination events campaign, “Keep Up.”

The campaign, unveiled by Mackay Isaac Tourism, aims to inspire visitors to explore the region’s exciting adventures, vibrant events, and breathtaking natural landscapes.

“Keep Up” encourages travellers of all ages to embrace the spirit of discovery and connection throughout the Mackay Isaac Region.

Mackay Isaac Tourism CEO Jeff Stewart-Harris said that the region's events calendar competes with those of neighbouring destinations, making it the ideal time to launch a campaign centred around major events.

"Events provide the opportunity for engagement with a broad audience who have the propensity to stay in region for longer or to visit in non-peak periods,” Mr Stewart-Harris said.

“‘Keep Up’ challenges travellers to match the vibrant rhythm of Mackay Isaac, where there's always something new to explore.

"From national sporting events like Mackay Marina Run and Fox Superflow to cultural festivals like the Mackay Festival of Arts and St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend, this campaign highlights the pioneering spirit that defines our region."

In the year ending June 2024, the Mackay Isaac Region welcomed 1.2 million overnight visitors - a 3.7 per cent increase - which includes a doubling in leisure visitation (up 19.3 per cent) since 2019, with spending continuing to surge over the same period to $803.1 million (up 51.3 per cent).

"What's especially exciting is the strong growth in holiday visitors, complementing our traditionally robust business visitor sector," Mr Stewart-Harris added.

"This campaign is about momentum.

“We want travellers to feel the thrill of what's next, encouraging them to stay longer and keep discovering the incredible moments that make Mackay Isaac unforgettable.

"Whether you're cheering at a sports event, hiking through lush rainforest trails, or dancing the night away at a festival, the “Keep Up” campaign captures the essence of what makes our region so special.”

Are you ready to "Keep Up”? Explore everything the Mackay Isaac Region has to offer at mackayisaac.com/whats-on.

This campaign has been made possible through funding support from the Queensland Government via Tourism and Events Queensland.

DIRTY DEEDS BRINGING THE THUNDER TO AIRLIE BEACH High-Energy Ac/Dc Tribute Show Of Unmatched Power, And Non-Stop Rock ‘N’ Roll Action

January 30, 2025

Dirty Deeds is back in Airlie Beach bringing the real Australian pub sound with their smashing tribute to AC/DC with the Bon Scott vs Brian Johnson show. Dirty Deeds have been kicking the can for AC/DC for over 20 years and are a force to be reckoned with LIVE on the big stage. No other show comes close to the pure power, energy and dedication of these High Voltage Rockers! Dirty Deeds are the real thing.
For two stand-alone shows Dirty Deeds are bringing AC/DC's signature sound of loud, pounding riffs and grooving back-beats to The Pub at Airlie Beach Hotel. Buckle in for three and a half hours of rib-crushing, blood-curdling, brain damaging, no bullshit, thunder rock. Dirty Deeds are brining you iconic music straight to your table, they’re not shy about getting on top of the bar and rocking in your face.
They know the pub crowds demand blood and they’re here to deliver with a sound that’s loud and crisp. Never down-tuned, Dirty Deeds brings the guitars, the drums and the legendary vocals that rocketed AC/DC into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. You won’t find any backing tracks here, just "a really good band," with years and years of ROCK experience.
This show is different as it gives two brilliant front men and one of the best lead guitarists ever to strut the stage besides Angus Young himself. There’s NO BULL when Dirty Deeds are showing off so you better be onboard for electric hard rock that defined an era. Both Brian Johnson and Bon Scott are going head-to-head with no restraint as Dirty Deeds brings both singers’ eras to life.
“It's amazing because it's a new crowd every time ... we've certainly packed the place out where it's standing room only and that's been fantastic.”
Forget wigs and toy cannons, it’s a crowd-pleasing tribute show that brings the authentic AD/DC experience. So, gather your mates and sit back with a cold one, or bring your girls and rock on that dance floor, everyone from your nan to your nephew will be screaming along. With platinum hits like ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ and ‘Back in Black’ and of course who could leave out ‘Highway to Hell’ and ‘Thunderstruck’.

Indigenous Australian Art On Tour At Artspace Mackay

January 24, 2025

Mackay region art followers can experience more than 60 contemporary and historical works from the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Indigenous Australian Art collection when the exhibition ‘I, Object’ tours Artspace Mackay from January 18 to March 30.

‘I, Object’ features contemporary painting, sculpture and installation by leading Queensland artists Vernon Ah Kee, Tony Albert, Michael Boiyool Anning, Fiona Foley, Danie Mellor, Christian Thompson, Warraba Weatherall and others, alongside 20 historical shields, boomerangs and clubs.

QAGOMA Director Chris Saines said ‘I, Object’ was an exhibition first developed by Bruce Johnson McLean, former Curator of Indigenous Australian Art at QAGOMA, and shown at the Gallery of Modern Art from August 2020 to August 2021.

“We’re really thrilled this iteration of ‘I, Object’ will now tour to audiences in regional Queensland including Rockhampton, Caboolture, Toowoomba, Ipswich, Cairns and Mackay,” Mr Saines said.

“‘I, Object’ considers the many complex relationships Indigenous Australian artists continue to have with objects – from the histories informing their creation to the social and cultural consequences of their collection,” he said.

“The exhibition demonstrates the great pride and inspiration of inherited cultural practices and historical Indigenous objects, and reveals the difficulties posed by their collection and estrangement.”

Deputy Mayor Karen May said it was exciting to have this significant exhibition of Indigenous Australian Art at our gallery.

“We’re grateful to QAGOMA for touring this exhibition to our gallery, providing an opportunity for us all to experience this important expression of identity, culture and connection,” Cr May said.

“This exhibition will run alongside three others opening in our Foundation and Foyer galleries also from January 18,” she said.

Thea Anamara Perkins: Dualities will be in the Foundation Gallery. These works incorporate portraiture and landscape to question representations of First Nations peoples and Country.
Danish Quapoor is a multidisciplinary artist based in Townsville. He is known for his distinctive flat-colour works which employ narratives that interrogate personal identity.
Quapoor’s mural installation ‘departed’, on the gallery’s foyer wall, will reflect upon departures from environments, situations and relationships.

Anneke Silver’s Iconic Moments will be in the Foyer Gallery and features expressive brush strokes of rich outback colour. They explore relationships between symbol and experience – the everyday and the extraordinary.

January 24, 2025

If your New Year's resolution is to read more, why not take advantage of the Mackay Libraries' vast collection? Librarian Sally has curated a list of must-read books to add to your summer reading list:

1. "Remarkably Bright Creatures" by Shelby Van Pelt
This heartwarming novel follows Tova Sullivan, a 70-year-old widow working as a night janitor at the Sowell Bay Aquarium. There, she forms an unexpected bond with Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus known for his mischievous nature. As their friendship deepens, both navigate their individual struggles with loss and isolation, leading to revelations that change their lives.

2. "Here One Moment" by Liane Moriarty
During a routine domestic flight, an elderly woman begins sharing eerily specific predictions about fellow passengers' deaths. Initially met with skepticism, her prophecies soon take on real gravity, leaving everyone aboard questioning fate and free will. Moriarty delves into themes of destiny and human connection in this thought-provoking tale.

3. "The It Girl" by Ruth Ware
A decade after her best friend April's murder at Oxford University, Hannah Jones is living in Edinburgh, pregnant and married to Will, April's former boyfriend. When new evidence emerges suggesting the man convicted based on Hannah's testimony may be innocent, she is compelled to revisit the past and uncover the truth, questioning her own memories and the events that transpired.

4. "Jade and Emerald" by Michelle See-Tho
Set in 1990s Melbourne, this novel tells the story of Lei Ling Wen, a twelve-year-old struggling to fit in. The narrative explores themes of identity, family, and the complexities of growing up.

5. "The Wife and the Widow" by Christian White

As their stories intertwine, shocking truths come to light, keeping readers on edge until the final page.

A Tidal Wave Of Success Between The Tides Earns Global Acclaim

January 24, 2025

Cape Hillsborough’s Between the Tides has captured global attention, earning two prestigious accolades that cement its status as a leader in cultural tourism.

Securing Silver in the Cultural Tourism category at the Queensland Tourism Awards and the Best Music Tourism Initiative at the 2024 Global Music Cities Awards in Riyadh, this event is set to shine as the centrepiece of the 2025 QLD Music Trails, The Reef.

Held on Yuwi Country, the event has captivated audiences with its extraordinary fusion of music, First Nations culture, and eco-tourism. Staged against the backdrop of Cape Hillsborough National Park, the event aligns with the tidal rhythms of the coastline, offering a one-of-a-kind experience that connects visitors to the region’s cultural significance.

The international acclaim speaks to the event’s innovation and impact. Winning the Best Music Tourism Initiative award at the Global Music Cities Awards places Between the Tides among the world’s most forward-thinking events. The accolade recognises its unique approach to uniting environmental education, cultural storytelling, and world-class music performances to create a deeply immersive experience.

“Throughout The Reef Trail and specifically at Between the Tides, we’re demonstrating that tourism is so much more than sightseeing.

“It educates, inspires, empowers and leaves a legacy of sustainability for the natural environment, people and culture, and the destination’s economy,” said Daryl Raven, CEO of QMF.

Between the Tides is a true community achievement, brought to life by the collaboration of QMF with the support of the Queensland Government, Queensland Parks and Wildlife, NRMA Parks and Resorts, the Yuwi Peoples, the Mackay Regional Council, and Mackay Isaac Tourism.

Minister for the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek, said QMF’s QLD Music Trails invites people to engage with great music and celebrated artists, while respectfully exploring Queensland’s iconic landscapes.

“The Crisafulli Government supports QMF to generate local jobs, as well as economic and social benefits through high quality music events, such as the award-winning Between the Tides event at Cape Hillsborough.

“The music-driven events offer extraordinary cultural experiences for Queensland
communities and visitors, enhancing the state’s reputation as a premier cultural tourism destination.

Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell said The Reef Trail is an incredible example of what Queensland has to offer in sustainable, eco-tourism experiences.

“The Reef Trail is a great example of fusing unique musical performances with Queensland’s natural landscape to create a must-attend event for visitors from around the country.

“From Magnetic Island to Mackay and Cape Hillsborough, this Trail highlights our world heritage areas, internationally recognised beaches, and diverse ecosystems, allowing environmentally conscious visitors to engage in eco-tourism experiences that promote conservation and support our tourism industry.

Between the Tides generated 122 visitor nights in the Mackay region, primarily from intrastate visitors, contributing $149,269 in direct and incremental expenditure to Queensland’s economy, with $78,247 benefitting the Mackay region directly.

Award-Winning Recognition - Between the Tides 2024 received: Silver in the Cultural Tourism category at the Queensland Tourism Awards 2024 and the title of Best Music Tourism Initiative at the Global Music Cities Awards in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 2024.
