Rotary Street Parade: Turning Heads And Wheels!

August 1, 2024

Long before the Great Barrier Reef Festival was established, the iconic Rotary Club Street Parade had already become a vital part of Whitsunday culture and is now a key element of the festival.
There will be fun for all the family showcasing the creativity of the region’s best businesses, schools, community groups and dancers.
The parade’s theme this year is ‘Above and Below,’ which is open to interpretation by institutions, but aligns with the festival’s reef theme.
Organiser of the Great Barrier Reef Festival, Margie Murphy stated that she is really looking forward to seeing everyone’s creations this year:
“We are really excited about the amount of business registrations coming through, and can’t wait to see what they will produce.”
Around 25 entries have been recieved so far this year, but organisers expect the event to be even bigger and better than previous years.
The parade allows both children and adults to enjoy dressing in vibrant, homemade ocean-themed outfits.
Alongside the bright and fabulous outfits, there will also be numerous luminous displays, singing and, of course, lots of lollies.
Judging this year's fantastic event is Mayor Ry Collins, Member for Whitsunday Amanda Camm MP, and Councillor Jan Clifford.
Festival attendees are invited to line the streets whilst waving to the floats as they pass by, and enjoy the spectacular atmosphere, while keeping a safe distance from the vehicles.
This year's festival has three winning categories, each with a prize and bragging rights up for grabs: best business, best not-for-profit and Most Creative and Wacky.

Racing the Tide Tie Up Your Laces For The Magic Mile

August 1, 2024

Calling all athletes, wannabe athletes and fun runners to the Coral Coast Fire Magic Mile.
This year’s event is once again hosted by the Whitsunday Running Club adding another element of fun to an already exciting day.
The event encourages anyone to participate, and the main aim of the day is to have fun!
The mile run, originating in England as a gambling distance, has persisted despite track and field's shift to metric measurements in the 1900s. It gained prominence with the quest for the four-minute mile in the 1950s and remains the only imperial distance for which the IAAF keeps an official world record. The current world record holders are Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj and Russia's Svetlana Masterkova.
Come get stuck into some running and history with the Magic Mile Run!

Green Waves Ahead: Whitsunday Escape Recyclable Regatta!

August 1, 2024

Ahoy! All aboard for sustainability. Hoist your sails, grab your ores and get ready for the Recyclable Regatta. Set to be a day of environmental fun, full of competition and creativity.
The Recyclable Regatta is one of the festival’s favourite events that brings the community together.
The rafts, which are created by recyclable materials, including bottles, plastic pipes, crates and more are prepared ahead of the event.
While rafts must be made of recyclables, any type of oar or paddle can be used during the event. Previous years have seen some great entries and 2024 is shaping up to be a great competition.
Starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, teams will race from Airlie Beach around a buoy and back to the finish line on the foreshore, creating an exhilarating display for spectators.
Organiser, Beth Sutherland, says she is most looking forward to seeing the kid's excitement on the day:
“Seeing the kids showing off their creations and getting the boats across the finish line still in one piece is no easy task, that's the most exciting bit for sure.”
All crew members in the raft must cross the line to complete the race.
This year, there has been an increase to 4 divisions: Children aged 6-12 and 13-17, Adults 18+, and local businesses.
May yer anchor be ever tight!

Feel The Burn, Fuel The Cure At The 2024 Harpertastic 1km Travelling Burpees Challenge

August 1, 2024

Get ready to sweat, smile, and make a difference at the Harpertastic 1km Travelling Burpees Challenge.

Returning for its fourth year, this event is set to make an even greater impact in 2024.

This annual event, dedicated to raising funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute, promises to be a major highlight, building on the momentum of last year’s fundraising success.

At just two years old, Harper Flynn was diagnosed with two rare gene mutations called CACNA1E and HK1, both of which are neurological based conditions. The young girl is now six-years-old, however, heavily relies on extensive care from family members and supporters in all aspects of her daily life.

Studies show that 1 in 20 children will be diagnosed with a genetic disorder or cancer, and each $50 raised funds one hour of crucial research.

Despite Harpers circumstances, relatives say her illness doesn’t stop her from doing the things she loves.

“She doesn’t really let her disability get in the way of what she wants to do every day,” said Harper’s grandmother Christine Joy.

By donating to the 'Jeans for Genes' initiative through the Harpertastic 1km Travelling Burpees Challenge, you can help support young children in their fight whilst contributing to the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

Scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd, 2024, the event will commence from 7.30am and will be located on the lawn in front of the Mackay Regional Council building.

To kickstart the morning, the children’s ‘Grayson’s Race for Research’ will be held, which is suitable for participants who are 12-year-olds and under.

As the children’s race concludes, the Harpertastic 1km Travel Burpees challenge will begin.

General Admission is $20 per adult and $10 for 12 years and younger.

Register online or via the QR code and get ready to sweat up a storm to raise funds for Children’s Medical Research. All funds raised go directly to Jeans for Genes!

The Holdovers Screening This Saturday In Pinnacle

July 25, 2024

Screening at the Pinnacle Playhouse at 7:00pm this Saturday, 27th July is THE HOLDOVERS, a feel-good film from a bygone era laced with wit and sarcasm. Golden Globe winner Paul Giamatti is a pleasure to watch as the grumpy teacher in charge of students stuck in a boarding school over the Christmas holidays.

The rest of the Mackay International Film Festival is only a week away so don't miss out on the Gala Opening Night on Friday 2nd August for a night of lost love, ancient secrets, and a journey that blurs the lines between worlds... all set in the stunning Italian countryside.

LA CHIMERA will be the Opening Night film starring Josh O'Connor and Isabella Rossellini. Ticket price includes Italian-inspired refreshments following the screening.

For more information, or to book tickets please visit: https://filmartsmackay.weebly.com/2024-miff.html

Get ready for a taste of real Christmas in July with a pre-festival screening of THE HOLDOVERS this Saturday
