A Haven For Cruise Ship Passengers

With the increasing number of cruise ships checking into Airlie Beach, more and more passengers and disembarking and deciding to travel outside the holiday mecca.

In fact, the team at The Big Mango and Bowen Information Centre have continued to welcome visitors as they travel north to Bowen and experience the greater Whitsunday region.

Take the McKay and Callingham families, who recently decided to charter a bus to travel to Bowen, a spot that their parents used to holiday at, for more than 10 years during the winter.

“This is not the first time that passengers from cruise ships arriving in Airlie Beach have chosen Bowen for their day trip,” explained Leanne Abernethy, Manager of Bowen Tourism and Business.

“With Airlie Beach becoming so popular on cruise ship itineraries, we see growth in the number of visitors choosing Bowen as part of their cruise ship adventures.”

Ms Abernethy explained that visitors often hire a car, charter a bus, or book a day tour that travels to Bowen in order to experience the region outside Airlie Beach.

In 2023, the Whitsundays welcomed 67 cruise ships into the region, with approximately 171,500 passengers on board, and over 80 per cent deciding to venture out into Airlie Beach.

As of 2024, about eight cruise have docked in Airlie Beach.
